Cape York has been on my 'To Do' list for many years.

After reading the daily reports of the Wainwright's top end tour a couple of months ago, I decided to put my name down on the waiting list for any spots that might come up for one of the same organised tours later this year.

Anyway, there has been an opening on the 21-26 August where a group of 8 had to cancel.
I've snaffled one of the spots, and am very excited to be getting the opportunity to finally do the ride.

I said I'd mention the other vacancies on the AMTRA forum in case someone from the club might like to join me for the ride.

Quick question to both of you - what size gear bag did you take on the actual tour?

The packing list suggests a 'sports bag', but I will only have a full-sized bike gear bag on the flight up, so I'm hoping that won't be too big for them. Obviously it will be half empty with the bike gear out...

Pete,

Onion and I  did a tour with 'Cape York Adventures' many years ago. As others have said, they are awesome fun.

When we arrived at the HQ, we were given a sports bag (which I still use), and we had to pack our life's belongings into that. Mind you, you don't need much!  They packed those bags into the support vehicle and you didn't need to carry anything.

You'll love the experience.  Nothing too difficult,  but a few tricky bits along the way.

Hey Pete do you know if there is an option to take your own bike and if it makes it much cheaper?

Yes, there is a BYO option, but it only saves about $900

The sports bag they are referring to is something the size of carry on luggage.

I took my normal gear bag with me in the plane, once I got to the hotel (tropical heritage in cairns) I unloaded everything and swapped out what i needed into the carry on bag, left my gear bag at hotel reception and wore my gear and carried my gloves, goggles, helmet and camel back on the shuttle bus. Once you get to the factory that you leave from your only there for 20 minutes before you head off on the bike. Sounds silly to be sitting on a bus in your gear but it worked well.

They'll give you a duffel bag to throw all your stuff in for the plane ride home and again you'll carry on your sports bag. Get back to the hotel, swap out your duffel into your gear bag and your good to go.

MASSIVE tip for you, take a fresh pair of socks for each day!!

Thanks for the tip Alastair.

How on earth do you fit the bulky items in such a small bag (e.g. sleeping bag, pillow, etc)?

I'm aiming to fly back to Melbourne the same evening as the flight from Bamaga gets in, so won't have an option of leaving my stuff at a hotel - could be interesting...
