Meanwhile I have tried to get a nice drawing of the double acting two stroke diesel.  Two much detail so I have done a line drawing.  Double acting was also done on four strokes but with less power to weight ratio.
Do you want more stories?

Phil what was the Idle, cruising and top RPM of those engines?

So double acting Four stroke, was there intake and exhaust valves off to the side where the pistons meet?

Wouldn’t you almost call that a 1 stroke for the centre piston anyway did the Conroe run through the middle of the bottom piston? With rings on it?

can you post pictures on here using your phone or would I need to blow the dust off the old PC?
All this talk about blowers I wanted to post a pic of one that I bought yesterday.

Great to get so many questions, keep them coming.
Lowest speed about 30 rpm.
Fastest speed about 100 rpm on opposed piston.   140 rpm on single piston types.
Double acting four strokes only had a single piston. Generally a top and bottom camshaft actuating valves in the cylinder head and in the bottom of the liner. Sort of like an upturned cylinder head with a hole in the middle where the piston rod went through.
The piston rod went through the lower piston and was sealed with a scraper box with internal rings as shown on  my sketch.
And a bit of reading.

So next question, the crankshaft is connected directly to the propeller, to go forward or backward the engine is run in the direction required, that's my understanding???

So I can understand that with a two stroke but a four stroke?

I enjoyed Mongolia, thank you Phil.

There is two ways Dave.

You need to upload them to a photo hosting site and them link them to here, I use   https://imgur.com/
You need to set up an account there if you want to go that way.

Or use that Browse button just below where you write your post and upload it in to your post, we them click on the attachments at the bottom of that post. That's how Phil has been uploading his info.

That is a bloody good question Tim I know these days they use pods that rotate 360 degrees
I can’t imagine shutting these big fellas down and restarting the in reverse looking forward to Phil’s reply on this one
Phil can you also give us an explanation on how you start these big engines?
