A super charged story -
Back in 1964 ish my mates and I were heading off to a sprint event being held at an ex WWII airfield.
The big attraction for us was George Browns Super Nero, a 1000cc Vincent rebuilt for sprinting and fitted with a super charger, also his Son Tony on a heavily modified Ariel 250 cc 2 stroke twin. Between them they held many UK records.
Myself and 3 mates were riding Ariel 250s at the time and with a top speed of 80mph, checked regularly, and good handling only limited by the footrests, they were a good thing.
Also advertised for the event was the appearance of some funny looking rail drag cars outside of the USA for the first time, they will be good support for the bikes we decided.
The bikes and some UK cars had done their first runs and it was time for the rails. Super Nero had been sounding and going well, we were happy. We decided to sit on the perimeter wood fence, which was also the safety barrier, and eat some tucker.
The first rail was being pushed towards us up the access road next to the fence and it was popping and banging with raw fuel and occasion flames coming out of the 8 stubby exhaust with a big blower sitting on top trying to help.
It had just popped and farted it's way past us when it BURST in life. FARK - I was one of two that fell off the back of the fence, we had never heard any thing like it before. Suddenly those funny cars had our attention.
