7:30 is an ugly time to meet for a ride, especially when the meeting point is an hour (or more) from home and even more so when you're someone who likes to allow and hour to get ready to leave! But meet at 7:30 we did. A short squirt up the road to Noojee and we met the rest of the crew for our weekend ride.
This ride had a couple of firsts. First first was that it was Big Col's first AMTRA ride in 15 years and he was like a dog with two tails, eager and rearing to go on his Big Tenere. Another first was that it was Scotty's first weekend ADV ride and you could tell! Never before have I seen so much luggage on a bike for 2 nights away! Pete decided he had a pannier for Friday, a pannier for Saturday and a top box for Sunday, along with a tank bag just-in-case! Pat was hoping he had a coffee machine in one of his panniers, but I suggested we could use one as a dunny (if things all went to ...poo!)
We pulled out of Noojee on time and ran the glorious twisty squirt up to Baw Baw, where the road turned to gravel as we came down South Face Road. Pat has already mentioned the route, so I won't elaborate, suffice to say this part of the trip was a little slower, but last time we did this section Pat, Richard and I did it in the failing light of dusk, so it was nice to see it in daylight.
Down the Hwy to Bruthen for lunch, fuel and a well deserved break.
Bruthen to Buchan and back onto the dirt for our run to McKillop's Bridge. The gravel road here affords great views for those that don't suffer from vertigo. This didn't include Steve, who traversed this section very carefully. Onto the Bridge and another short stop for views and photos.
After our break here, we hightailed it into our overnight stop at delegate. Accommodation at the pub was comfortable, food was plentiful and beer was cold. we sat around for a good while, talking sh!t and drinking. Some of the crew headed off earlyish, while others...didn't! But with 550ks on my clock, it was understandable and reasonable to feel a little weary.
