I have an older R1150GS Adventure. My mate has a 07 1200 non adventure. You can't go wrong with them. They are big mofo bikes, but once you get over that they are a hoot. Super comfortable, plenty of lazy grunt and great cargo options. And they are getting very cheap for the used ones now days. My mate payed less than 10k for his with 70 thousand kays.

I have only owned the BMW  R1100S road bike, air/oil cooled   boxer motor was brilliant,  chalked up 130,000km with no problems,

Had a look today at the KTM 1200 & the YAMAHA 1200 & have come to the conclusion that the 1200 are just to heavy for a me & my small frame. So had a look at what Craig said the 800 GS about 50 kg lighter & heaps cheaper may be the 800 the go.

Why not have a look at V-strom 650/1000 as well. Not saying they are the same as the GS/Adv R bikes, just a possible match to your intended use and price range. New ones look better than old ones. Rode one of the older 650's on the road and it was a nice sort of bike though a bit underpowered compared to the XJR. In average hands the 650 will be a more nimble commuter than the 1000 and in the tighter roads there was no way I was keeping up with it on the XJR (probably wouldn't keep up if I was on another 650 either).

Lot of choice in adventure range, and Craig and his mates have a lot of experience with them. It depends if you want a road or off road bias and what sort of budget you have in mind as to what bike would suit you best.
The older I get, the slower I was.

Thanks for the info Mat.
Looked up the Suzis but I have a soft spot for the BMW & I'll be in the second  hand market there's lots of people out there like me that get a bee in the bonet & get bikes & then never use them..
there some good second hand ones out there.
