Hi Guy's,

After 30 odd years at the RACV, I decided it was time for another job somewhere else. So, my wife and I bought a caravan, spent three weeks getting the house ready to be rented out and hit the road north last Thursday.

Our plan at the moment is to be on the road for at least 12 months. However, this is flexible as the house is rented out and I am not going through all the aggro of boxing things up a second time!!!

We haven't got far as we are currently in Sydney. Our goal is to get to the top of the Cape by the end of September, after that we are going to be looking for work somewhere.

The only down side to all this is I didn't have enough room or power in the Ranger to bring my bike!!!

Ride safely and I will see you when I get back.

Cheers Colin

Way to go Colin, dont be surprised in the number of grey nomads out there doing the same thing theres thousands of them & if you know of an area that you want to visit my advise is to book ahead. My wife & I did a short trip up North in a camper van that we hired in Cairns a couple of years ago & some places were booked out months in advance. One place in Northern qld we couldn't even get an UNPOWERED tent site let alone for a caravan
Cheers Geoff

Great stuff, Colin.

Enjoy that (semi) retired lifestyle and keep us informed of your progress.

Hey Colin
Sounds great hope you enjoy the trip
If you’re heading to the NT at all let me know I have a mate that is the mechanic at the resort at Yellow Waters in Jabiru he has a spot there for a van his allowed visitors I’m sure he’d love someone to take out Barra fishing and he might even be able to hook you up with some work I know he has before.
All the best Dave

Wow you finally escaped the RA Col! Bloody long time to work for the one company thats for sure.

Its awesome cruising around with a van stopping wherever you want, we've done a fair bit of it including 3 months to FNQ last year which included the cape and the Old Telegraph Track. There's heaps of free camping spots around, load Wikicamps on your phone, its the best app for free camping and finding spots worth visiting. As Geoff mentioned though there are heaps of grey nomads on the road and sometimes the free camps can be pretty full.

Have a great trip, catch up when you get back

Cheers

Have a great safe time Colin.

We took off for 12 months and stayed out 20, loved it.

The only place we booked ahead was in Broome, all the rest we just winged it. Plenty of free camps in the "Camps Australia" book or web site. If you have the book you can forget the friggin internet and use the latest Hema map book, both are discounted at the RACV :)

It will take a few weeks for you to slow down and get used to having nuffin to do but relax and chat.
It's just more time to be flat out!
