Thanks, Tony.
Good to know old trials bike can be found at a vinduro.
The DRZ 400 should on the short-list.

N+1
That made me laugh....
DRZ 250 is on my list but would it handle a not-so-cruisy Marysville with ease?

Yep, they're a good bike. A proper trail bike, not a fire breathing race bike.

I rode one for years. Easy to ride, easy to maintain. Just a bit outdated.

The WR250r is a trail bike.
It's just more time to be flat out!

Peter.  I ride a DRZ250 and it's probably done Marysville at least 30 + times and about 10 times leading it. It's a great trail bike for a beginner, torquey engine good for hills it just keeps on pulling. Many times its gotten up slippery greasy hills where more powerful bikes have just burst into wheel spin. It's very reliable and inexpensive to keep in good condition.  The best performance mod is good tyres!
The biggest downside is it's weight.  I've lightened mine by removing many unnecessary parts, fitting a lighter head light and a lithium battery but it is still too heavy.  Hope this helps with your decision.

I have to dis agree with just about all of the above advice. Every time  i have ridden a DRZ 400 I hated it. Its horrible in every way. Top heavy under sprung dung box. The DRZ250 was a good machine... 20 years ago. The WR250R while a bit better than both is still heavy, cumbersome barge. The Wr250F would be a much better machine, even for a beginner rider, at least it has decent suspension and reasonable weight. You really need to have a closer look at a AJP PR4 (the full rego version) Flipper has one, ask him for an opinion. My all time fave easy to ride bikes iare the Honda CRF230, but you can only  rec rego it (forget the rego version) or an XR200 fitted with XR250 suspension/ front brakes.

PS, I own a CRF230/ XR200, have owned a WR250F, briefly owned a WR250R and ridden both DRZ's.
